Jiu-Jitsu Training when injured
Hello,
I’ve been involved in Combat Sports (Jiu-Jitsu) for about 2 years, can you tell me how you cope with training when you receive injuries that we tend to be hampered with due to the nature of the sport.
John - Reading, Berk’s, UK
Hi John,
Firstly, in Jiu-Jitsu I always recommend that we concentrate on sports injury prevention as much as possible. This process alone involves several parts. I’m sure that you are aware of a good warm up at the beginning of a session, followed by good stretching before practicing any techniques, lifting any weights, sparring, grappling etc
However, you are right, due to the nature of sports such as Jiu-Jitsu, you will inevitably pick up injuries. Depending on the severity, I still try to workout lightly whenever possible. Listen to your body and if the injury is severe or persists, then seek medical attention asap.
I have picked up shoulder injuries, knee ligament injuries, ankle injuries, severed tendons, broken fingers and toes in contact sports and by following good advice and programs, I’ve always managed to come back stronger.
The best advice is to concentrate on your fitness and health - The whole picture which includes Cardio, strength, flexiblity, stamina, endurance, nutrition and so on. Not only are you more likely to avoid injury but you will bounce back quicker too.
