Jiu Jitsu Moves
msb12 | October 29th, 2008

There is such a wide range of techniques that are carried out in this extraordinary Martial art.

Many people refer to Jiu Jitsu as being the original Mixed Martial Art as it forms the basis of several others such as Judo, Karate and Aikido.

Judo is the throwing aspect of Jiu Jitsu moves that was extracted so that the throws could be practiced more safely in a competitive arena.

Karate was the striking aspect that was extracted so the striking elements of Jiu Jitsu could be practiced as a separate entity.

Aikido is the joint manipulating techniques where these flowing techniques are used to great effect, oftentimes taking advantage of the limited range of motion of a person’s joints to control their movement.

Some of the more traditional Styles of Jiu Jitsu will also include weapons such as “The Sword”

It is such a wide range of Jiu Jitsu moves that keeps it all so very interesting

The Throws consist of such techniques as The Hip Throw, this is a basic technique from which so many others are based.

Striking, Pressure Points, Ground Defense (Grappling), Take-Downs, Submissions, Escape Techniques, Weapons defense.

Styles have evolved in different directions, each concentrating on slightly different aspects from the next.

Jiu Jitsu moves often take advantage of such factors as Leverage, Momentum and Anatomy to gain a distinct advantage over your opponent.

Personal Alarms
msb12 | October 28th, 2008

Personal Alarms are very handy little devices to assist in personal safety.

They are small and inexpensive and can be used for either personal or medical emergency.

A Medical Emergency - Someone with a medical condition may find it useful to carry something that is going to attract attention quickly if they need immediate assistance.

Personal Alarms are designed to make a great deal of noise in order to attract attention, the ones that we use come complete with a lanyard, a keychain clip and a also a breaker wire that allows the Personal Alarms to be used a Door or Window Alarm.

An Attacker’s Deterrent
- Personal Alarms can also be used if you were to become the intended victim of a physical attack, a personal alarm can be used to attract attention, which can also attract help.

In a high stress situation, like that of an attack when your body is experiencing an adrenalin overload, there are already enough feelings to deal with, such as your pounding heart, shaking body, tunneled vision, impaired hearing, and mind going blank. Not only could you lose your ability to shout but it is not possible for most people to carry out any fine motor skills at all, so a simple device that is easily activated by pulling a cord is a good option.

Criminals do not want to be hurt or caught, a personal alarm can be enough to at least deter the attacker if he feels that chance of attracting other people to the scene as this cause an unexpected complication to the situation that they do not want.

An excellent Gift Idea - Personal Alarms can make ideal little Christmas or Birthday gifts if you are looking for something a little different.

Personal Alarms have been used by people in many different ways - Teachers, Realtors, Probation Officers, Hotel Workers, Cleaners. It’s not just good for work, many people feel safer to have them when travelling or even just out shopping as you just never know when it may come in handy.

Always keep the Personal Alarm where it can be accessed very easily and quickly.

Many people have recently contacted me to see where they can buy Personal Alarms. They are available at:

Sparring Gear
msb12 | October 25th, 2008

In combat Sport, full contact training is absolutely necessary, however, good sparring gear is a must to ensure safety.

There are many elements of training that must be included in your program, each one of them as important as the next -

  • Conditioning
  • Strength Training
  • Technical Skill Training
  • Grappling
  • Sparring
  • Drills
  • Flexibility

By using good sparring gear whilst training, unnecessary injuries will be avoided. This is especially important as most of your sparring will be carried out in the period approaching your competition and you do not want to be carrying injuries into the arena with you.

Depending on your specific Art, some of the following items will be useful -

Self Defense Classes for Kids
msb12 | October 23rd, 2008

At Jiu Jitsu Calgary we place a great deal of emphasis on Self Defense Classes for Kids. Our sessions vary from the youngest group at 5-8 years old, the Junior Group at 9-12 years old and at present the 13 years and up join in with the adults.

Our School is growing at a good rate and it won’t be long before we create another group for the Teens 13-15 years old.

Our Self Defense classes for kids, incorporate some basic Martial Arts Techniques, Safety Awareness and a load of fun. The older the kids get, the sessions become longer and more intense but still keeping that fun element.

A Long Term Activity - It is in everybody’s interest to keep the youngsters interested, by doing this we help create a healthy appetite for Martial arts and the children will stay involved for many years to come. Giving kids focus, something to concentrate their efforts in and see continual improvement in their skills.

We have many adult Instructors available to help so the children get the individual attention that’s required to ensure technical skills are carried out correctly.

Benefits of Martial Arts for Kids - There are so many benefits for children to get involved in such an activity, from developing mental focus, increasing confidence, improving co-ordination, learning respect, discipline and self-discipline. These are all qualities that can only help both in childhood and later on in life.

It is highly likely that such ability will help your children in school with the improved focus, self-discipline and respect.

Parental Relief - It is a relief for many parents as their children grow up, knowing that they are equipped with some potentially life saving physical skills, together with a discipline to use them wisely. Our Self Defense Classes for Kids also create an opportunity for many children to meet and make new friends.

It is so important for children to get a good start in life and after all, they are our future so it is our responsibility to give them the best start possible, helping them to maximize on that potential that everyone has within, yet so few take advantage of both physically and mentally.

Health and Fitness for Kids - The health and Fitness benefits are also very important in a world where physical activity in children seems to be limited to the TV and Computer Games for many. Courses will help develop Children’s Fitness, strength and flexibility.

Equally as important (especially with the younger kids) is the Safety Awareness factor that we incorporate into the Self Defense Classes for kids, this covers many areas, more so for a child in relation to an adult. What is a stranger, what to do if lost, what to do if approached by a stranger, grabbed by an adult stranger, and so on. Some very basic knowledge and skills that all children should have yet often times do not.

We really believe in the Self Defense Classes for kids that we have developed and with the time, thought and effort that are continually applied in their development, they are only going to get better and better.
